The fighting series returns with a brand new look.

April 20, 2010 - Blizzard said it best when StarCraft II was announced, "Hell, it's about time."

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 may be 10 years old, but it's still popular in competitive fighting circles. Fans have been requesting a new game in the franchise for ages, and after the fighting genre got a swift kick in the pants in 2009, Capcom is all set to deliver. Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is finally officially announced.

The game is scheduled for a spring 2011 release date on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms. Unlike the download-only Marvel vs. Capcom 2, this will be a disc-based title. In its current state of production there are around 30 combatants in the game including Wolverine, Iron Man, Hulk, Morrigan, Ryu, and newcomer Chris Redfield of Resident Evil fame. Based on the new trailer, it also seems like Dr. Doom, Deadpool, Magneto, Captain America and Chun-Li could also be in the game. Capcom is still hard at work trying to squeeze in as many characters as possible before the tentative ship date, so there's no word yet on what the final total might be and whether it'll rival the over 50 playable fighters in MvC2. Expect a number of characters to return along with others who have yet to appear in the franchise.

Capcom says the reason it takes a while to implement each character isn't strictly because of balancing, but also because this is an entirely new game being built from the ground up. The team is using Capcom's MT Framework tech from Lost Planet 2 and Resident Evil 5 to bring this game to life, and is going for an authentic comic-book style of look. All we have to go on at the moment is the trailer which doesn't show any gameplay, but we're hoping to see more in the coming months. Capcom is handling all art design, though Marvel is checking the work to make sure it's appropriate and fits with the fiction.

What Capcom and Marvel seem particularly excited about is the immense rise in popularity of some of Marvel's characters over the past decade. Thanks to flicks like the X-Men trilogy, Iron Man, and the Spider-Man movies, it seems like there's a greater level of public awareness than ever. As for Capcom, in the time between now and MvC2's release there have been plenty of new franchises, including Dead Rising and Lost Planet. Does that mean we'll see Okami or Monster Hunter characters in Marvel vs. Capcom 3? We'll have to wait and see. We might even hear about something on the same level of weirdness as Gears of War characters showing up in Lost Planet 2.

Since the game is still in development, there aren't yet many specifics on how it'll play. It'll include an online mode and the mechanics are going to be similar to Marvel vs. Capcom 2, but not much is yet set in stone. Hyper combos will be in the game, but it hasn't been determined yet if the game's fights will take place between teams of three or two, and the way assists work is still being tweaked. As reiterated by Capcom's Keiji Inafune who oversees global production, the company is dedicated to producing games that appeal to a worldwide audience. No real specifics were offered as to what this means for Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

Franchise fans may be either horrified or sublimely pleased to learn that all the music is being redone for this game. I think we can safely say that means there'll be no grating jazz tracks and we can all forget about getting taken for a ride. If you don't know what that last part means, don't worry about it. Another change will be how the story works if you're playing through solo. Players shouldn't expect any kind of epic tale, but there will be character specific endings here along with a greater emphasis on story, and a boss character that Marvel says fans will appreciate.

This game is all about fan service, and plenty of character specific quips and even in-match events are being implemented. More casual fans less dialed into each character's history and personality probably won't care as much, but these kinds of things will likely bring a smile to the faces of those who spend more time editing Wolverine's Wikipedia page than under direct sunlight. Again, this is just what we're being told at this point, we haven't yet been able to see the game in action.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is a game many fans have wanted for years, and now that it's official and we can all speculate about who'll be included and how it will play. The way this announcement was timed seems perfectly aligned with showing off more at this year's E3. We'll be at the show, running from June 15 – 17 at the Los Angeles Convention Center and if anything's shown off there, you can be sure we'll cover it.

Otros datos interesantes:

Official details were released today for Marvel vs. Capcom 3. To see some wicked high resolution artwork and some more speculation on who the roster members will be, hit the link below.

Here's a run down of what to expect from the new title.

- The game is set for a spring 2011 release date on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

- Right now the development team is looking at having about 30 characters — or so — in the roster.

- Seth Killian said that fans can expect "a healthy dose of new blood" when it comes to fighter selection.

- It's a 3-on-3 tag team fighting game, players build their own squads and uses Assists as well. Very similar to MvC2.

- The title uses an advanced version of Capcom's MT Framework, which powered Resident Evil 5 and Lost Planet 2.

- MvC3 has aerial combos, hyper combos and other original gameplay systems.

- The game is officially titled Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds.

- The goal is to get 100 pieces of music in the game, that includes old favorites, new tracks and remixes. The 'Take You For A Ride' song won't be returning, at least, it's not planned right now.

- There are no plans for an arcade, PC or Wii version.

- The team behind this wants this game to have a strong storyline.

- Development started on MvC3 in the summer of 2008.

- The art you see below are actually in-game character models.

Confirmed characters so far are Wolverine, Spider-Man, The Hulk, Magneto, Storm and a few others will return.

- The Marvel vs. Capcom 3 development team said they will be blowing fans out of the water with the sheer number of characters this game includes on the disc.

- This will be another 2D fighter — gameplay-wise — but will be something of a cross between the original Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Street Fighter 4.

- The rumored release date is late 2010 or early 2011 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, no plans right now for other systems.

- The game will run in 1080p resolution.

- It will be a disc-based release.

- Apparently the game will have unlockables again.

- Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will be playable at this year's E3 which is held on June 15 - 17th.

Is Marvel vs. Capcom 3 going to have more than 30 characters?

We're not saying anything beyond "at least 30" right now. Any other reports beyond that are rumor and speculation.

Marvel's Chris Baker spoke with Kotaku about Marvel vs. Capcom 3
In the article he mentions that the final roster, while nearing completion, isn't finalized yet. He also discusses what they look for when they're considering adding someone to the game.

During a live question and answer session, he said that no one is off limits when it comes to licensing issues. Later he talked about Spider-man quite extensively, and seemed to slip up and when asked about Deadpool being in the game.

Anyway, here's a clip from the Kotaku write up.

"There are absolutely characters that will be much more relevant in the next few years and you want to get them in there," Baker said. "There are characters that have become a lot more popular since the last Marvel Vs. Capcom game, that weren't in there that we wanted to get in there. There are characters that have been invented in the last ten years that we may want to get in there."

While I wasn't able to squeeze any more names of characters out of Baker, he hinted that more names would be coming in the next few months.

ART STYLE INTRO BY: Ryota Niitsuma, Producer.

Ryota Niitsuma, Marvel vs. Capcom 3's producer, has started blogging
about the new title. Capcom-Unity translated the first entry.

This isn't too interesting, but Niitsuma talks about the art style of the game.

At last, it begins!

Greetings! This is Niitsuma, and I'm the producer at Capcom for this new title. What's this new title? Well, we're finally able to announce it!

"Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Fate of Two Worlds"!! We've received so many requests from our fans all over the world, saying "You aren't going to do a sequel?" or "If you do it, I want this!", and this time we're finally able to announce this to the fans!

Unfortunately we can't discuss specifics of the game right now, but from here on out we'll be able to reveal information directly to our fans, so I hope that you'll check in frequently to see what we're up to!

Now then, about that pretty trailer...

We'll probably be saying it quite often about this game, but this time around, the character design concept is based around the American Comic Book.

We're making it our goal to bring the Marvel comic books to life to create a game that is undeniably exciting from the get go, so please make sure to check back often to get the latest update on our progress!

Finally, did you notice all of those silhouettes hanging about? I'm guessing those who are well-informed may already know, but how about you poke around and see what you can find? Smile

Make sure you check back every now and then to this blog for any updates we may have!

This is Niitsuma, signing off!

It's worth pointing out that the confirmed characters on the Marvel side have all had major motion pictures associated with them recently, Wolverine, The Hulk and Iron Man.

Marvel is also working on Captain America, Thor and Avengers movies, along with Iron Man 2 which will be in theaters on May 7, 2010.

Also, remember that the artwork shown yesterday is actually the in-game character models.

Mas datos!!!

Ausgamers.com has a pretty interesting interview with Marvel vs. Capcom 3's producer Ryota Niitsuma. This ends up being a solid read with all sorts of random morsels about the game. Here's a bulleted run down.

Capcom is aiming for this to appeal to hardcore and casual gamers again. The idea pitched at the presentation was for 'maximized depth' with 'minimized complexity'.

Key team members from the past Vs. games are working on MvC3.

The game's subhead "Fate of Two Worlds" will actually have meaning. The team is utilizing the MT Framework to ensure a visually compelling story for each character.

There are no plans for an arcade release.

Nemesis and Tyrant of Resident Evil fame weren't included because they'd be a little too grotesque to get the game in under it's current expected rating.

The Fantastic Four will not be in the game.

AusGamers: In terms of online, from an Australian perspective it's actually quite difficult to get good matchmaking and therefore good matches happening, and this was very true of Street Fighter IV which didn't have the best matchmaking system out there. However, there are a few games out there now that do cater to countries like ours, with poor connections and generally slower internet than the rest of the world, with options to search for local hosts and servers - is this something you're looking at for Marvel Vs Capcom 3?

Niitsuma: I hate to keep telling you that is something we're taking under consideration but... that is something we're taking under consideration (laughs). Because the game isn't finished yet, we're still looking at how we can integrate all the online elements and we're looking into what works best for the game itself. As for what you mentioned regarding local servers, that is something we're looking at very closely as a key idea that has been floated to us; the issue then is how do we go about implementing that so as to make sure we have a smooth system in place for everyone and that anyone can use, but rest assured it is on the table and it's something we're looking at very closely.

MvC3's backgrounds to be much more interesting

Marvel's Chris Baker talked with Kotaku about how the backgrounds in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 are going to be better
than the previous games.

Although he doesn't go into specifics, he does seemed hyped about this. Here's a grab.

No more generic backdrops? Can it be true?

It's definitely true. While the previous two entries in the Marvel Vs. Capcom series gave us more characters than we ever hoped to see in a fighting game, the stages haven't exactly stood out. Players didn't mind so much, since their focus is generally on the combatants, but for spectators like me, they were at best bland and generic.

Not so with Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, says Marvel Studio's manager of licensed games Chris Baker. The stages in Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 will have just as much character as the characters themselves.

Otro Poquito mas:

Capcom employees Seth Killian and Christian Svensson recently visited the Unity Boards to dish a little bit of information on Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and the SSF4 Dojo Edition. Here's the run down.

I've read that Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is going to have elements from Street Fighter 4, but the 3 vs 3 style is back... Also read that its going to be completely different from MvC2 as well as different from Tatsunoko vs Capcom?

So of the three, which game would Marvel vs. Capcom 3 resemble most in terms of gameplay?

Seth: There's a lot of stuff flying around, but in terms of SFIV, the biggest similarity is simply in terms of using 3D models with a 2D fighting style.

3v3 is back, and as far as "completely different" from MvC2 I would say that is simply not correct. It ain't. In terms of gameplay, between SFIV, TvC, and MvC2, MvC3 will by far most resemble MvC2.

Which software are you guys using to get the character models to look the way they do in Marvel vs. Capcom 3?

Sven: Softimage has tended to be the modeling tool of choice for our teams in Japan and Maya for animation.

That said, what you're seeing is some very clever shader work within the MT Framework engine tools.

Hablando de los finales y un poco de la historia Seth K.:

-Will everyone have their own ending in Marvel vs. Capcom 3?

Seth: Everybody gets their own endings, and the story will be "robust" for a fighting game. I can promise at least it will blow the endings in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 out of the water Razz

Hablan con el Director de MvsC3 T.Q. Jefferson:

-How long has Marvel vs. Capcom 3 been in development?

It’s been in development for well over a year now.

-Can you tell us how Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will compare to Marvel vs. Capcom 2?

It’s going to be everything that was and better. It’s going to be awesome from start to finish! It’s going to cherry pick the best characters from Capcom’s multiple franchises. It’s going to cherry pick some of the best characters from our franchises. It’s Marvel vs. Capcom, it’s almost self-explanatory.
